Successions in Europe

The European Regulation on successions, in force since 17th August 2015, has introduced the great novelty that citizens can now choose the legal system governing their future successions. Furthermore, this regulation is of a universal nature. This means the every citizen may choose the legal rules applied to succession in this or the other country. It is therefore necessary to be familiar with the essentials and this has led the European Affairs Commission of UINL to draw up “succession” factsheets on European countries outside the EU and the United Kingdom, knowing that those concerning EU member states can be found on the website .
