News The UINL organizes a forum to strengthen notarial cooperation in the fight against economic crime
22/11/2018 On November 26 and 27, the UINL, in collaboration with the Spanish General Council of the Notariat, organises the International Forum “Economic Crimes: Collaboration of the Notariat in Prevention and Prosecution’, in Madrid (Spain).
Experts from the United Nations, the European Commission, the Financial Action Task Force (of Latin America), the European Anti-Fraud Office, and Europol will discuss on means to streng then and systematise the collaboration of notaries in the prevention and fight against crimes such as terrorist financing, money laundering andtax fraud, among others.
Several Spanish authorities and representatives of the enforcement bodies will also be attending this Forum, as well as prosecutors, judges, notaries and professors.
The fight against economic crimes, particularlymoney laundering and terrorist financing, is a priority of the UINL,which established the goal of intensifyingthe cooperation of all its Member Notariats to combat these plagues.In fact, during its General Meeting in Buenos Aires last October, the Union issued a “Guide of good practices in the fight against money laundering and terrorist financing in the notarial sector.” This manual will be a reference forthe 88 Member Notariats for assisting governments and global organizations in the fightagainst money laundering.
This international Forum is a step forwardin the growing engagementof the UINL in several international working groups, as GAFILAT, FATIF, IMF and OAS. It will give participants the opportunityto learn about the initiatives of other global organizations committed to work againstthese crimes; toanalyse the existing difficulties for their prevention; and to evaluate ways in which notaries can collaborate for their detection and prosecution.
