Building pro-poor land tools: UINL participation in the 10th World Urban Forum (UN-Habitat)

14/02/2020

UINL participated in the meeting organized by the Global Land Tool Network (GLTN) during the 10th World Urban Forum organized by UN-Habitat in Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates) from 8 to 13 February.

“The World Urban Forum (WUF) was established in 2001 by the United Nations to address one of the most pressing issues facing the world today: rapid urbanization and its impact on communities, cities, economies, climate change and policies. Convened by UN-Habitat, the Forum is a high level, open and inclusive platform for addressing the challenges of sustainable urbanization.”

The GLTN is an alliance of international partners contributing to poverty reduction by improving access to land and security of tenure for all, facilitated by UN-Habitat, the UN agency that promotes sustainable urban development.

Collaboration between the world Notariat and the GLTN on land and poverty issues began in 2010.
A formal cooperation agreement with UN-Habitat/GLTN was then signed in 2016.
The GLTN was also presented during the four UINL Land conferences in Burkina Faso, Mexico, Vietnam and Niger.

The Abu Dhabi meeting provided an opportunity for further collaboration in support of the right to housing for the poor.
During this meeting, the value of the notarial document, and of the formalization by the "Land Titling" process, in order to prove a right on the property and thus avoid land conflicts was highlighted. Gender equality issues were also studied.
