Land tenure and Voluntary Guidelines by Jean-Maurice DURAND, expert in land governance for FAO

04/05/2021

Jean-Maurice Durand, an expert in land governance at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) presents the current challenges and the role played by notaries in land matters.

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization's (FAO) "Voluntary Guidelines for Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security" were officially adopted in May 2012.

FAO and the International Union of Notaries (UINL) signed an agreement regarding their dissemination and implementation on January 8, 2016.

The Voluntary Guidelines have become a reference document for many States, international organizations, including the World Bank, and land tenure stakeholders around the world.

A Technical Guide for notaries, drafted in cooperation with UINL, on the use of the Voluntary Guidelines should be presented soon.
